I n recent years the Hyundai i30 has become an increasingly impressive option for those seeking what remains the most popular type of car on sale: It competes against, among others, the Ford Focus , Vauxhall Astra , Volkswagen Golf and Seat Leon , which leaves a question mark as to how Hyundai intends to stand out amongst such well established rivals. The answer is partly in offering the good value and long warranty for which Hyundais are renowned, but also - if you believe the hype - by improving the quality of the overall package to a level that puts it on a par with the best in class.

    R ear seat space is again comparable with the likes of the VW Golf, with enough room for one six footer to sit behind another, and decent headroom allround.

    The i30 also has an almost flat floor across the rear seats compared with rivals, which is good news for anybody travelling in the admittedly narrow middle seat. That said, if rear seat space is a priority the aforementioned Honda or Skoda will serve you better still. Even on inch wheels it soaks up bumps in an assured way, and while there is some wind and road noise at motorway speeds it is far from terrible.

    T he i30 has the most advanced dashboard layout of any Hyundai to date, and while the improvements are relatively subtle they add up to a real feeling of quality and hi-tech. The colour TFT screen that sits between the dials on Premium models is a case in point, with a slickness to the menu system that trumps anything else in this class. The main central touchscreen system is also impressive, and because Hyundai has kept a few physical shortcut buttons it is much easier to use than the infotainment in a Ford Focus or Seat Leon.

    Note though that you need a model with the 8-inch screen in order to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. T he i30 features a fairly high window line that does a good job of making occupants feel cocooned in the car, but also mean you lose a little bit of visibility, particularly when glancing over your shoulder to change lanes on a motorway or manoeuvre into a parking space.

    Upgrading from the base-spec model gets you parking sensors and a reversing camera, both of which are very useful. What the i30 lacks is much in the way of performance, and so while overtaking is possible it requires a fair amount of planning.

    A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is available on the 1. W hile perfectly competent, the i30 is not brimming with the kind of feel that makes for an exciting drive. Both the Mazda3 and Ford Focus handle with more verve thanks to their superior steering and a more direct response when changing direction. In fact, Hyundais are proving to be very durable in the long term with little in the way of significant problems. In reality, we failed to exceed 55mpg when testing this engine whereas you could expect close to 60mpg out of a similarly powerful Volkswagen Golf or Seat Leon.

    Opting for the seven-speed automatic will also result in taking a slight hit on fuel economy. The long warranty also helps with resale values. Company car drivers will want to look to the 1.

    T he i30 ticks all the boxes as far as standard safety equipment is concerned, teaming six airbags, Isofix mounting points and electronic stability control with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and a hill start assist system that stops the car from rolling backwards when pulling away on a slope.
