    Ferrari 's single-marque spec- racing series--the Ferrari Challenge--has become a considerable success since its inception a decade ago.

    Gruppo Ferrari Maserati is now looking to a new rent-a-racer program--Trofeo--to do the same for the ongoing rebirth of Maserati. The Trofeo Maserati Europa series, launched this year with seven races throughout Italy, Germany, England, and France, has been well received.

Trofeo is a true "arrive and drive" deal: Maserati supplies cars, crews, spare parts, tires, vehicle transportation, accommodations, meals, hospitality, insurance, P.     A Trofeo begins life as a Cambiocorsa Coupe chassis, which receives a substantial yet straightforward transformation to race spec. The result is horsepower, compared to the stocker's SAE net rating.

    Ride height is lowered, and the shocks, springs, bushings, and anti-roll bars are uprated for track duty; inch BBS alloy wheels are wrapped by Pirelli racing slicks. The lower front fascia is a unique piece, and the high-mounted rear wing comes from the Ferrari Challenge car. Huge Brembo brakes are teamed with the factory ABS and driver-defeatable traction-control system. Composite pieces replace the hood and doors, and the glass side windows are swapped for Plexiglas.

    Much of the cabin is stripped out, along with the carpeting, sound deadening, climate-control system, etc. The leather that lines the instrument panel and console is exchanged for a racy blue shade of Alcantara suede, while the stock seating is replaced by Sabelt racing buckets with multipoint harnesses. Safety gear includes a bladdered fuel cell, a multi-element rollcage, and an onboard fire system. The Trofeo is a significant pounds--about 15 percent--lighter than a stock Coupe.

    It still seems strange to drive a Maserati on what for decades was Ferrari's very private test track, Pista di Fiorano. But these former crosstown rivals are now siblings, so our pulling out of the same pit garage used by Ferrari's F1 team doesn't even raise an eyebrow. Our initial suspicion that this might be another twitchy, tail-happy race car was unfounded: It's stable, consistent, communicative--and giggly fast. The Trofeo's voice is hale and hearty; not the high-pitched blare of a Ferrari Challenge car, but a deep, throaty, loud gurgle.

    The engine makes power everywhere on the tach. Maserati engineers purposely left the traction control in place to assist under wet conditions and as a safety mechanism for less-experienced drivers. But it kills the acceleration out of tight corners, so hot-shoes will just switch it off.
