In a fast changing performance car landscape the updated Porsche Boxster gets a new name and an all-new four-cylinder turbo engine. The latest model is now.

Turn-in remains commendably crisp; we didn't notice any difference in terms of body roll, or lack thereof, as compared to the regulation Boxster. But based on a several-hundred-mile drive through the Italian hill and countryside, the Boxster S' handling feels about as faultless as faultless gets.

Porsche 's Boxster has always been a favorite, one of the best of the new-era roadsters introduced a few years ago. But that enthusiasm has always had a wish list attached: It's as if Porsche had our personal Boxster Wish List in hand when brewing up the hardware that makes the standard Boxster into an S model, of which about 33 percent of overall production will be. At the heart of the upgrade is a displacement increase from 2.

This is accomplished by an increase in both bore The net result is a percent increase in horsepower, from to about halfway between the standard Boxster's power output and that of the horsepower Carrera. Hardware changes are abundant, including a new dual resonance intake manifold and the introduction of "E Gas" drive-by-wire throttle technology.

A third radiator fitted to the revised front fascia adds extra cooling capacity, and the Carrera donates its heavier-duty crankshaft and Motronic ME 7. Lest you fear the longer stroke might subdue the Boxster's rev-happy nature, fuhgetaboutit: Redline actually increases by revs, to Backing up the fortified flat six is your choice of two new transaxles.

The clutch lover's pick is a new, closer-ratio six-speed manual that starts off with a lower numerically higher first gear. The new fifth is geared about where the old fourth was, with sixth, of course, becoming the overdrive. Closer gear spacing means less rpm dropoff between shifts.

Porsche pioneered the modern era of "manumatic" transmissions, and advances the science with the introduction of Tiptronic S. Though it operates much the same, Tip S offers a few new tricks for the enthusiast driver. Now, even with the selector in Drive, the manual mode can be temporarily summoned up by actuating the steering wheel up- or downshift buttons.

It'll stay in manual mode for 8. We've never felt the Boxster was underbraked, but Porsche saw fit to graft the Carrera brake system-lock, stock, and rotor-onto the S.

That means you get larger and wider vented brake rotors-now cross-drilled-and the aluminum, four-piston calipers are enameled a very racy red. Most of the basic suspension design and hardware remains the same save for longer rear-axle control arms , but the tunable pieces have been re-spec'd in the name of even better handling. Springs and anti-roll bars are stiffer, and the shock absorbers contain more aggressive valving.

Ride height drops by 0. S-specific, five-spoke inch wheels and tires are now standard. Other external styling touches are subtle: With 51 more horsepower, 44 more pound-feet of torque, and an extra gear to stir it all with, we expected the Boxster S to really perform. Simply put, it does. Porsche claims the S is a full second faster to 60 mph than the standard Boxster; they say kph comes up in 5. However, we've tested the 2.

What the numbers don't describe is how flexible the new powerplant is. The non-S needs to be worked to get the most out of it, with not much action available below rpm. But this one delivers more punch, and delivers it at a lower rpm; you can really feel the fat part of the torque curve anywhere within revs of its rpm peak.
